Sudanese Movement Demands Relocating UN Headquarters from New York Over Burhan Visa
DelayThe National Nationalist Movement of Sudanese Independents demands moving the UN headquarters from New York following the obstruction of Al-Burhan’s visa.
The National Movement of Independents in Sudan has submitted an official memorandum to the UN Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, and UN Member States, calling for an urgent international debate to relocate the permanent headquarters of the United Nations from New York to a neutral country.
This action follows the delay by U.S. authorities in issuing an entry visa to General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sudanese Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, preventing his participation in the UN General Assembly meetings. Reports suggest the visa issuance was tied to political positions regarding proposed ceasefires, sparking international concern over host-nation obligations.
The memorandum—signed by Al-Nour Abdullah Bakhit, Head of the National Movement of Independents and former parliamentary representative for the Al-Fashqa district—emphasizes that subjecting state delegations’ access to bilateral political disputes compromises the neutrality, independence, and foundational charter of the international organization.
Key Highlights and Proposals from the Memorandum:
* International Committee Creation: A formal request for the General Assembly to establish a committee to evaluate the legal, financial, administrative, and security impacts of moving the UN headquarters.
* Proposed Neutral Alternatives: The memorandum highlights several potential host locations based on infrastructure and neutrality, including:
* Geneva, Switzerland: Leveraging its long-standing tradition of diplomatic neutrality.
* Vienna, Austria: Building on its established role as a major UN center.
* Nairobi, Kenya: Enhancing regional balance by establishing the main headquarters in Africa.
* Transparent Criteria: Opening nominations to all member states under objective, clear criteria to select a host nation capable of ensuring free and unhindered access for all delegations.
The Movement clarified that the initiative is not directed against the United States or its people, but rather aims to uphold the UN Charter and ensure equal representation for all member states free from political pressure by any host country.
