Among these efforts, the return of print journalism has become a necessity for completing the image of civil and political life. This endeavor is no less important than the ongoing security and administrative initiatives. As global experiences show, print journalism is not merely a means of reporting news—it is a symbol of state presence and a tool for strengthening public awareness and ensuring stability.

Today, with the formation of the “Supreme National Committee for the Rehabilitation of Khartoum State,” headed by Lieutenant General Ibrahim Jaber, and granted broad powers including the removal of military presence from the capital and the arrangement of its security and service conditions, a real opportunity looms for restoring civil life. However, this project, with all its ambition and the effort invested, will not be complete without restoring one of the most prominent tools of awareness and enlightenment: print journalism.

Before the war, Khartoum used to issue no fewer than 18 daily newspapers covering political, social, and sports scenes, in a clear indication of the vitality of public life and the plurality of voices and opinion platforms. After the outbreak of the war, this sector collapsed entirely: printing stopped, advertisements disappeared, subscriptions evaporated, and media institutions lost the ability to cover even the simplest of their expenses. The sector was affected, like other sectors, by the destruction of infrastructure as a result of the shameful attacks by the Rapid Support Militia.

Nevertheless, action should not be left to the state alone; we all must step forward. The ball is now in the court of publishers and journalists, as they are primarily responsible for bearing their national responsibility at this historical juncture. Reprinting newspapers, even with limited resources, represents a bold step toward restoring confidence in the existence of the state and documenting the moment of true transformation in Sudan.

Thus, the challenge remains: who will be the first to resume publishing the first printed newspaper in Khartoum after the war? Whoever takes the lead in this initiative will have written a new line in the record of both their professional history and the national history.

As for the claim some people make that “the whole world has shifted to electronic journalism,” it is an unrealistic notion in the current Sudanese context. The advanced world that has moved to digital publishing has strong financial infrastructure, a culture of paying for content, and effective advertising networks. But in Sudan, there is no subscription system, no advertising, and no mechanisms for mass digital payments. Digital transformation is not an impromptu or free shift, but rather a massive institutional project that has yet to begin.

The Lebanese experience indicates that the return of print journalism after the civil war (1975–1990) clearly symbolized the Lebanese state’s restoration of the public sphere and its institutions. The regular publication of newspapers like An-Nahar and As-Safir after the Taif Agreement marked the return of civil life to the capital, Beirut—despite the continuing structural and economic crises later on (Le Monde, 24 November 1989).

In this context, there is a need for an initiative from the National Council for Press and Publications to support the return of print journalism by facilitating technical and organizational procedures, addressing challenges related to funding, distribution, and protecting the journalistic work environment. It is also expected that the six largest Sudanese newspapers—for example: Al-Intibaha, Al-Tayyar, Al-Sudani, Al-Dar, Al-Mijhar Al-Siyasi, and Alwan—will assume their national responsibility and take the initiative to resume regular printing, considering it a fundamental manifestation of the state’s return to the capital.

Khartoum today is in a moment of new construction, and the state needs living symbols that reassure people that the nation has not disappeared and that its institutions can be revived once again. Print journalism is not a luxury, but one of the forms of this conscious rebirth.

Let this be a clear call from #Face_of_Truth, which we send to the mailbox of the Press and Publications Council, publishers, and journalists, to act now—not tomorrow—to take their rightful place in the battle to restore the capital, through a national initiative to reprint Sudanese newspapers at their original offices in Khartoum as they were before the war, as a conscious investment in restoring security, peace, the country’s future, and supporting the national project led by opinion leaders before any other actors.

Wishing you all wellness and good health.

Monday, July 21, 2025

Shglawi55@gmail.com

Face of Truth | Ibrahim Shglawi The Return of Print Journalism to Khartoum Serious efforts are underway to restore the features of the state in the capital, Khartoum, more than two years after the outbreak of war.
