Daily movement and the authentic Omdurmani spirit have been restored; confidence and belonging have been regained, and the social and political order has been reproduced.

According to Durkheim’s philosophy, “social facts”—values, customs, and relationships—cannot be easily erased because they reside in the shared consciousness and form the basis for the continuity of society after shocks.

Omdurman, with its cultural and political history, embodies this truth. The teacher’s return to the classroom, the merchant’s return to the shop, and the imam’s return to the pulpit have formed حلقات in the reproduction of the social structure. This is a living embodiment of the “organic solidarity” identified by Durkheim, where roles complement one another and systems mutually reinforce, making the need for the other a foundation for post-war reconstruction.

War may disrupt the social rhythm and push people into displacement, but it does not eliminate cultural and political rootedness as long as the collective conscience remains alive. In this context, pain and suffering become instruments of awareness. The restoration of daily life is not merely a routine act; it is a political and social practice that affirms the city’s capacity to reshape itself. Markets, gatherings, popular rituals, mosques, and all symbols of everyday life are tools for reproducing informal social authority, ensuring societal stability, and reinforcing the values of tolerance and coexistence among individuals.

The return of the musaharati and the youth of the Makashifiya yesterday with the familiar drum and rhythm was not merely a popular ritual; it was a smart declaration of the city’s recovery of its social and political pulse. From Al-Mourada to Wad Nubawi, and from Al-Omda neighborhood to Al-Thawrat, the will of society to preserve its customs, traditions, and shared symbols becomes evident, reflecting the collective conscience’s ability to reproduce itself politically and culturally.

At Al-Sayyida Sanhouri Mosque, worshippers gathered for the first Taraweeh prayer after the liberation of the capital in March 2025, affirming that legitimacy and social authority emerge from people’s ability to assemble in safety and peace. This is a practical application of Durkheim’s idea of “collective effervescence,” where emotions unify within a shared ritual, generating a sense of belonging and social cohesion.

Politics here is not merely the management of resources or the imposition of laws; it is the art of reproducing social life after shocks, such that daily participation in markets, mosques, and local occasions becomes part of the very foundation of state and society.

Cities with deep roots are not built on stone or roads alone, but on a shared, alert memory and a renewed collective will. Today, the pulse of Omdurman is heard in the footsteps returning to the alleys and in a smile that greets tomorrow with confidence forged through hardship. This proves that cities, despite upheavals, are capable of reproducing themselves through the collective conscience, organic solidarity, and hope.

The experience of Omdurman demonstrates that societies, according to Durkheim’s philosophy, possess the capacity to revive themselves autonomously, and that solidarity is not a slogan to be raised but a daily practice that begins with the call of the musaharati, is completed in the rows of Taraweeh, and extends into reconstruction workshops. Every daily act here carries a political and social dimension: opening a shop, attending a communal prayer, practicing a popular ritual—each of these reshapes authority and affirms that society reproduces itself without waiting for formal institutions.

Omdurman today—or rather the capital Khartoum as a whole—is not merely a city recovering; it is a society discovering its latent power and affirming that history, shared memory, and organic solidarity are its political and social safety valve.

Between the call of the musaharati, the rows of worshippers, and the roar of supplication, Durkheim’s philosophy appears in its finest form: “Society is not merely a transient crowd but a living, renewing entity capable of reproducing itself continuously and reviving life in its social, political, and cultural meanings.” Therefore, Omdurman today is not merely a recovering city but a society rediscovering its latent power and the strength that others attempted to strip away, affirming that history, shared memory, and organic solidarity are its social and political safety valve.

Political power, according to #Truths_Lens, is not built on the rigidity of laws or institutions alone, but on the cohesion of society and its shared will. Life after war is not merely the recovery of place; it is the re-founding of meaning—linking the individual to society, history to the present, and politics to collective awareness.

Omdurman proves that the city is shaped by will, by shared consciousness, and by people’s capacity to reproduce themselves and their society after upheavals, making every moment of daily life a testimony to the continuity, strength, and will of society.

Wishing you continued health and well-being
Thursday, February 19, 2026
Shglawi55@gmail.com

Omdurman after the war is a living society that reproduces itself in line with what Émile Durkheim described: “Society is an entity in its own right, transcending individuals and carrying the collective conscience that binds them together and shapes their shared identity.” As we moved with a number of friends and members of the press, …

[7
