Environmental and Health Effects of War Remains on Returnees to Khartoum After Displacement
In the aftermath of wars and conflicts, affected communities face serious environmental and health challenges
Due to the accumulation of human remains, dismembered body parts, and remnants of weapons and munitions.
These remnants pose a direct threat not only to human health,
But also to environmental resources such as water, soil, and air,
Especially in areas lacking proper burial or sanitation systems.
First: Environmental and Health Effects of Human Remains
1. Biological Decomposition and Release of Cadaveric Fluids
Corpses decompose within days to weeks depending on temperature and humidity,
Releasing fluids that contain harmful bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli), Salmonella, and Clostridium.
These fluids may seep into groundwater or surface water sources, contaminating them.
Decomposition produces foul odors and toxic gases such as ammonia and hydrogen sulfide,
Which affect air quality and cause respiratory diseases.

2. Transmission of Infectious Diseases
Generally, corpses are not contagious after death,
Unless the deceased died of epidemic diseases such as cholera, Ebola, or plague.
Infections can spread to burial workers or nearby residents
Through open wounds or inhalation of contaminated dust.

Second: War Remnants (Munitions, Heavy Metals, Weapon Fragments)
1. Heavy Metal Pollution
Remnants of weapons contain metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and depleted uranium.
These substances seep into soil and water, causing serious diseases such as cancer, kidney failure,
And developmental delays in children.

2. Unexploded Ordnance (UXOs)
They pose a constant threat through sudden detonation or chemical leakage.
They lead to severe injuries, amputations, or death,
Especially among children and those working in cleanup or agriculture.

Third: Scattered Human Limbs from Explosions
These remains cause severe visual and psychological pollution,
And may attract stray dogs and scavenging birds, increasing the risk of disease transmission.
Their open-air decomposition contributes to the spread of bacteria and viruses in air and soil.

Environmental and Humanitarian Recommendations
2. Prompt and safe burial of corpses in accordance with international standards.
4. Identification and clear marking of unexploded ordnance locations with warnings.
6. Conduct comprehensive environmental assessments before resettling populations in affected areas.
8. Provide personal protective equipment to all cleanup and decontamination teams.
10. Collaborate with international organizations like the Red Cross and UNEP to implement safety protocols.
Appendix: Hantavirus in Khartoum
Mode of Transmission:
Hantavirus is transmitted through inhaling dust particles contaminated with the dried urine or droppings of rodents and reptiles.
Symptoms:
Headache, muscle pain, cough, chest congestion, hemorrhagic fever, kidney failure, and a mortality rate of up to 15%.
Preventive Measures:
Wear N95 masks and gloves.
Avoid using brooms or shaking dry furniture.
Spray floors with water mixed with disinfectants such as Dettol or bleach.
Remove dirt using a mop, not dry vacuumi
